The University of Northern British Columbia has launched a new jersey for their track and field team, which the school says is the first in Canada.

The new Timberwolves replacement jersey uses a logo created by Gitxsan artist Trevor Angus. UNBC says this is the first jersey designed entirely by an indigenous artist in any college or university sports program in the country.

"I hope that the pride that every student athlete feels when wearing this uniform is something they will always remember," UNBC Sports Director Loralyn Murdoch said at a media conference.

Angus, a former UNBC student, also designed the logo for the school’s Aboriginal Center.

His green, black, yellow and white logo is an interpretation of the Timberwolf logo used by UNBC since 1998, and features custom indigenous piping on the sides of the football and basketball uniform versions.

"I like the whole wolf theme that already exists, and I have been working on it. I always think of wolves as an animal that works in groups or teams, so I think it's very suitable," Angus said.

"Before I put a pencil on the paper, I already had a vision of what I wanted to do. I am very satisfied with the results. I hope UNBC will win many games with these jerseys."

In addition to the new logo, the uniform also has syllables, which translates as "En Cha Huna". UNBC's motto from Dakelh (Carrier) Elders is interpreted as "respect for all forms of life".

The football version of the jersey will make its debut on Saturday, and the basketball version of the jersey will make its debut on November 6. Both games will be played against TRU WolfPack.
